    The first long exposure most photographers make is an accident. They leave the shutter open too long in low light and get something blurred and strange — water turned to vapor, traffic dissolved as streaks of color. Most people delete it.

    Long exposure is the practice of keeping your shutter open long enough that moving things blur and still things stay sharp. Call it less a technique than a way of reading a scene differently — you stop looking at what's there and start looking at what's moving, how fast, and what happens when you compress that movement into a single frame.

    What long exposure actually does

    Your camera's sensor collects light for as long as the shutter stays open. At 1/1000s, that's a frozen instant. At two seconds, the sensor is still working while the world moves — everything that moved during those two seconds bleeds into the frame alongside everything that held still.

    What moves blurs in proportion to its speed and the duration. What stays still records sharply. That contrast between blurred motion and sharp anchor is where the image lives. Without it, you've just made a slow photograph.

    Practical results: water smooths out, clouds streak, people walking through a one-minute exposure in daylight nearly disappear, vehicle lights become trails across dark streets. Michael Kenna — whose prints are in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris — works with exposures of up to ten hours. His description of why: with long exposures, you can photograph what the human eye is incapable of seeing. Not motion blur. Cumulative time.

    Most photographers working with this technique will never need ten hours. But the principle applies at any duration — you're deciding how much time to compress into a single frame, not just how long to hold the button.

    The gear

    A tripod. Any camera movement during the exposure creates blur that looks like a mistake, not a choice. It doesn't need to be expensive — it needs to not move. Extend the legs fully rather than raising the centre column — raising it generally reduces stability, particularly on uneven ground or in wind.. In wind, hang your camera bag from the center hook.

    A remote shutter release, or the self-timer. Your finger on the button at the wrong moment is enough to ruin a three-minute exposure. A remote eliminates that. No remote — set the camera's two-second delay, press, and move your hand away before it fires.

    ND filters for daylight. In bright conditions, even your narrowest aperture at base ISO won't get you a slow enough shutter speed without overexposing. A neutral density filter reduces incoming light without affecting color — As an example: a 6-stop ND turns a correct 1/60s exposure into roughly 1 second. A 10-stop turns that same starting exposure into around 17 seconds. These are example conversions — the actual result depends on your starting exposure, which changes with conditions. The filter changes nothing about your composition, just how long you can hold the shutter open.

    What you don't need them for: dawn, dusk, heavy overcast, and night. In genuinely low light, the correct exposure at f/8 and ISO 100 may already require several seconds. This is why those hours are so productive for this kind of photography.

    Camera settings

    ISO at base — usually 100 or 200. Long exposures accumulate heat noise from the sensor. Lower ISO means less noise compounding that.

    Aperture around f/8. Long exposure scenes mostly need depth — front-to-back sharpness — and f/8 delivers that on most lenses without the diffraction softness that appears at f/16 or f/22. Change if your scene genuinely calls for it, but this is where most people work.

    Shutter speed — this is where the image is actually made:

    • 1–4 seconds: water softens but keeps texture. Clouds barely shift.
    • 10–30 seconds: water smooths out. Cloud movement starts reading as direction.
    • 1–3 minutes: water loses almost all texture, often goes pale. Cloud streaks are strong and directional.
    • 5+ minutes: the surface of water looks like fog. Clouds spread into broad washes of tone. The image stops describing what was there and starts describing how long you waited.

    Actual durations vary with conditions. Fast water smooths quicker than slow water. Thin cloud on a light breeze needs longer than heavy overcast moving fast. Shoot a test frame at a quarter of your planned duration — it tells you whether the movement is reading before you commit to the full exposure.

    Understanding how shutter speed sits within the full exposure triangle helps here — slowing the shutter changes overall exposure, and you'll compensate through aperture or ISO.

    Shoot in RAW. Long exposures need post-processing headroom — highlight recovery, shadow detail, noise reduction. JPEG doesn't give you much of that.

    Long Exposure Noise Reduction, if your camera has it: takes a same-length dark frame after your shot and subtracts the sensor's heat noise from the image. Doubles your time at each shot, but meaningfully cleans up exposures of 30 seconds or more.

    Without a tripod

    Wedge the camera against something that doesn't move — a wall, a post, a rock, the ground. For exposures under a second, this can produce usable results. Go longer and the small vibrations you can't feel — breathing, the wind, a passing vehicle — blur the parts of the frame that are supposed to be sharp. That's the opposite of what the technique does.

    Without an ND filter

    Possible in low light. If the ambient conditions already require a slow shutter speed for correct exposure — dawn, dusk, overcast days, deep shade — the filter is unnecessary. In full daylight with no filter, stopping down to f/22 and using base ISO might get you to around 1/4 second before the frame blows out. That's enough to suggest movement in fast water. Not enough to smooth it. The practical answer is either to shoot in lower light or to get an ND filter.

    Reading the scene before you shoot

    Five minutes of looking before setting up pays off more than most equipment. The images that hold together tend to have one strong static anchor — a rock formation, a pier, a building, a headland — against which the motion plays. Without something fixed and visually solid in the frame, blurred motion has nothing to contrast against and the result feels formless rather than intentional.

    Before touching a setting, establish two things: what's moving and how fast, and whether the static element in your frame can hold its own as a photograph — not purely as a surface for the blur to play against. If the anchor is weak, no shutter speed fixes it. Walk to a better position first.

    How you approach composition in a standard scene applies here too — long exposure adds time as a variable, but the structural thinking is the same.

    Long exposure on iPhone

    Apple added the Long Exposure effect to Live Photos in iOS 11. It works on iPhone 6s and later. Shoot with Live Photos enabled, open the image in Photos, swipe up on the image, and select Long Exposure. The phone blends roughly three seconds of Live Photo frames into a single image. Limited duration, but the effect is real.

    For more control, Slow Shutter Cam — the app most iPhone photographers use for this — gives you manual shutter speed and works with a phone tripod mount. The same physical rules apply: stable surface, better results in low light. The smaller sensor accumulates noise faster than a dedicated camera, particularly in longer durations, but for waterfalls, waves, and light trails in reasonable light, it works.

    Problems that come up

    Camera shake despite a tripod: check that every leg lock is fully tightened, the center column is at its minimum, and you're using a remote or self-timer. A gust of wind during a 30-second exposure shows up clearly in the result — it's worth waiting it out.

    Overexposed in daylight: the conditions need an ND filter, or you need to come back when the light is lower. There is no settings workaround that gives you a four-second exposure in noon sun without a filter.

    Can't get focus with the ND filter on: the filter cuts too much light for autofocus to read the scene reliably. Focus on your subject before attaching the filter, then flip to manual focus so it can't drift.

    Purple or magenta color cast: common with budget ND filters. Correct with white balance adjustments in post, or replace the filter.

    Flat result with no sense of movement: usually a composition problem. Either the anchor isn't strong enough, or the moving element doesn't have enough contrast against it. Worth looking at the scene again before changing any settings.

    What the technique teaches

    Work with long exposure regularly, and you start reading locations differently. The speed of a current, the direction of cloud cover, how quickly the light is shifting — these things become automatic to notice rather than something you have to think about. Not useful in daily life, but very useful the next time you're standing somewhere with a camera and a tripod.

    Slow photography trains observation by requiring it. You cannot rush a three-minute exposure, and in that time, you look. Returning to the same place repeatedly through structured assignments builds the same habit faster — and what long exposure practice produces, over time, is exactly the kind of patient, considered eye that project-based photography demands.     Questions that come up

    Where does long exposure start?

    No fixed definition. Anything slow enough to visibly blur the movement in your specific scene — which might be 1/15s for fast action, or several minutes for slow-moving cloud on a calm day.

    Do I need an ND filter?

    Only in bright light. In low light, the exposure time is already long enough.

    What is Bulb mode?

    The shutter stays open for as long as you hold the release. Standard manual mode caps at 30 seconds; Bulb has no limit.

    Can I do it without a tripod?

    Under one second on a genuinely braced surface, sometimes. Anything longer, the static elements go soft, and the technique stops doing what it's meant to.

    Best aperture?

    f/8 for most scenes. Enough depth of field, without the diffraction softness that appears at very small apertures.
