You don’t have to be a photojournalist to create compelling photo essays. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, the photo essay is a brilliant way to breathe life into your images and touch those in your audience of family and friends. But they're not only that, photo essays are a great way to gain new skills, inspiration and put that ever-important enthusiasm back into your photography.

In this interactive four-lesson / four-assignment course mentored by award-winning professional photographer, David Bathgate, you’ll be guided through the entire process of crafting your own photo essay, from start to finish. David will be there every step of the way - to answer your questions, critique your work, and offer constructive advice, when and where you need it.


Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Select stories that capture, inform and motivate audiences
  • Plan and conduct a photo-essay project from start to finish
  • Make contacts and establish rapport to get the story coverage you need
  • Effectively edit your work to create a compelling visual narrative
  • Accurately caption your images for a polished "finishing touch."

 What you will need:

  • Digital SLR or compact mirrorless camera (film is also fine, but you'll need to scan images for upload to the TCI website)
  • Selection of lenses ranging from wide-angle to medium telephoto
  • Computer with photo-processing software (e.g. Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop)
  • A lightweight, but study tripod would be beneficial
