You don’t have to be a photojournalist or photo professional to create engaging stories with your photographs. Vacations are excellent situations for capturing stunning photo essays to show friends and family, and to remember those amazing times by. So whether you’re an amateur, or a professional, the photo essay is a brilliant way to breathe life into your images and touch those in your audience, whoever that might be. But not only that, photo essays are a great way to gain new skills, inspiration and put that ever-important enthusiasm back into your photography.

In this interactive 4-lesson / 4-practical-assignment course mentored by award-winning professional photographer, David Bathgate, you’ll be guided through the entire process of crafting your own photo essay - from start to finish. David will be there every step of the way - to answer your questions, critique your work, and offer constructive advice, when and wherever you need it.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Capture subjects and situations to inform, entertain and motivate audiences.
  • Plan and conduct a photo-essay project from start to finish.
  • Make contacts and establish rapport to get the story coverage you want.
  • Effectively edit your work to create a powerful visual narrative.
  • Accurately caption your images for a polished "finishing touch."

 What you will need:

  • Digital SLR or compact mirrorless camera (film is also fine, but you'll need to scan images for upload to the TCI website). Even a smartphone will do!
  • Selection of lenses (if you have them), ranging from wide-angle to medium telephoto. That said, an entire photo essay can be done with just one lens - the "standard" 50mm.
  • Computer with photo-processing software (e.g. Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop).
  • A lightweight, but study tripod or monopod would be beneficial.
Lesson plan:
  • Choosing a Subject & Creating a Story Line
  • Gaining Entrance, Establishing Rapport, Beginning Your Shoot
  • Choosing "Selects" & Editing Your Work
  • Establishing Your Final Layout & Captioning Your Work
