Advancing from snapshots to making well composed photographs is a huge step for photographers. It requires competency with light, colour, composition and capturing that definitive sense of moment. But that is just the beginning!

This online and interactive photography course with The Compelling Image founder, David Bathgate, will take you beyond the "rules" to stretch your creativity. You'll begin to view the photographic frame as your personal "canvas" on which to express a vision of the world that is uniquely your own.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply camera controls - shutter speed, aperture and ISO - as means to expanded photographic expression
  • Use composition in unconventional ways to bring tension, "feel" and emotion to your photos
  • Mix flash with ambient light to add drama to pictures you make
  • Interpret scenes and subjects according to your vision - your personal way of seeing the world

What you will need:

  • Digital SLR or mirrorless compact camera (If shooting film, you will need access to a scanner in order to digitize your work for upload to the TCI website)
  • Selection of lenses from wide-angle to medium telephoto
  • Computer with photo-processing software (e.g. Photoshop)
  • A light but study tripod would be beneficial

This fun and valuable course taught by David Bathgate helped me to see in ways I hadn't before. I offerd assignments that challenged me and stretched my creativity with making photographs. Most importantly, I've come to better understand the kinds of photographs that stir my emotions, and how to best convey my visual messages to the viewer. I really believe I'm on my way - with much more practice, of course - to developing a "signiture style" of my own.

David Bathgate was most helpful, honest, timely, and supportive throughout this 4-lesson course. I enjoyed his style of presenting information, his side stories based on his own experiences, and his inspiring critiques of the work I submitted for assignments.  I will definitely be taking more courses at this online school.

l've always been intriqued by a photographer's style, how it develops, and why it takes the form it does. After taking this course with David Bathgate, I began to see just how a particular style begins to develop. These four lessons and their assignments in this course have the student try new things, look at the photographic frame in many different ways, and go out and try techniques and framings that may not have been thought of before. At course end I came to understand that photographic style is as much practice - shooting and shooting, as it is trying new approaches with the camera. And over time individuality begins to show through - a personal "style" starts to express itself. A wonderful course and great instructor support.
