Oct. 30 - Nov. 4, 2012
Varanasi - “City of Shiva”- is one of India’s holiest places. Perched on the banks of the River Ganges, it is here that the physical and spiritual realms of Hinduism meet - even collide in a sometimes overwhelming jumble of ancient tradition and up-close “human condition.”
Hindu pilgrims journey from afar to Varanasi in search of salvation - to wash away a lifetime of sins in the sacred, cool waters of the Ganges. It is here, too, that lives once lived draw to their blazing climax - returned to ashes on the ghats of this ancient city.
Sometimes “edgy” - always visually inspiring, Varanasi marks the center of the Hindu Universe. And for the adventurous and inquisitive photographer willing to dig below this city’s gritty surface, the images awarded can be stunningly “once-in-a-lifetime.”
This 5-day intensive workshop will meet Varanasi “head-on” - on its own terms, to capture all the vibrancy and energy this Indian city on the Ganges has to offer.
Who should attend?
This workshop is open to advanced beginners through aspiring professionals-ages 18 and older.

How will the workshop be organized?
Enrollment will be limited to 20 participants and the workshop will consist of two lines of empasis in our coverage:
1. General Photography Emphasis: For students already familiar with their camera and how to use it, this emphasis of the Varanasi workshop will lead you to apply your knowledge to capture stunning images of the cityi and those who live here. We'll review the basics of camera use and good composition and "turn you loose" (under our watchful and supportive eye, of course) to begin your own photographic journey into the City of Shiva. Instructor soon to be announced.
2. The Photo-Essay: Students may work with photojournalist and documentary photographer, David Bathgate, to produce a creative and powerful photo-essay about a particular aspect (or general overview) of Varanasi and its people.
Both instructors will work side-by-side in the field with students, lending guidance and advice when and where needed. Likewise, local translators / “fixers” will be available for those times when particular subject access and circumstances require.
What will be the end result of our workshop coverage?
