Ashwini Bhatia

Instructor

AshwiniAshwini Bhatia drifted from New Delhi to his adopted mountain home in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, in the fall of 1997. Having left behind a position as Publishing Manager for HarperCollins India, he taught math and physics at the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharamshala for the next four years. In summer 2001, Ashwini opened the doors of a new photo-lab. Moonpeak Pictures was born in the midst of the Tibetan community in exile – McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamsala). It wasn’t long thereafter that this man’s hobby of photography became his new career. It was in 2001, too, that Ashwini turned his macro-lens toward the many sub-tropical to alpine flower species that grow in this northern part of the sub-continent. When not photographing flowers in his garden and beyond, overseeing business in his modern lab, or chatting with locals and tourists in his welcomingly-comfortable café next door, Ashwini is covering Tibetan affairs – in both:  words and pictures – for the Associated Press.
